FollowWozniacki, Kerber Cruise to the Semifinals in New York
NEW YORK – Among other compelling storylines at this year's US Open has been the re-emergence of former world No. 1 Caroline Wozniacki. On Tuesday, her run continued as she made short work of Latvian Anastasija Sevastova (6-0, 6-2) to advance to her first Grand Slam semifinal since 2014, also at the US Open.
Unlike her previous four victories in the Big Apple, Wozniacki cruised through her quarterfinal match, needing just 64 minutes to get past the overmatched and injured Latvian. Unfortunately for Sevastova, she was riddled with an ankle injury early on and just could not shake it off as the more experience Wozniacki took complete advantage.
En route to her victory, Wozniacki placed 80 percent of her first serves in play. In addition, she won 75 percent of her second serves and 73 percent of her net points to advance. If that weren't enough, the Dane was near flawless as she committed just five unforced errors while Sevastova committed 30.
So, Wozniacki's impressive run in Flushing Meadows continues, but she will be up for her biggest test this week when she squares off against No. 2 Angelique Kerber in the semis after she defeated No. 7 Roberta Vinci 7-5, 6-0 in her quarterfinal match.
So far this calendar year, Kerber has won the Australian Open, reached the finals at Wimbledon and won a silver medal at the Summer Olympics. In fact, at last month's Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati, Kerber fell just short of overtaking Serena Williams for world no. 1, losing to Karolina Pliskova in the final.
Overall, though, Kerber's success in 2016 coupled with her four WTA titles in 2015 makes her the favorite to be the next world no. 1 in women's tennis. But before we crown a new No. 1, an old No. 1 will have something to say first as Wozniacki will hope to upend the German to advance to her second US Open final in three years.
