FollowUS Open Day 5: Tsonga, Wozniacki Advance
NEW YORK – As the third round began, some exciting matchups started to play out at the US Open. One such battle was on the men's side as No. 9 Jo-Wilfried Tsonga took on No. 23 Kevin Anderson.
Entering Friday's match, Tsonga had won both previous meetings against Anderson as the Frenchman was looking to keep his winning ways going against the South African.
Thanks largely to an 80 percent win percentage on his first serve and taking 83 percent of his net points, Tsonga advanced to the fourth round at the US Open, defeating Anderson 6-3, 6-4, 7-6(4). But while Tsonga was the more dominant of the two on this day, Anderson didn't do himself any favors as he committed 40 unforced errors – far more than the Frenchman's 18.
Despite sitting among the world's Top 10, though, Tsonga has never won a Grand Slam. In fact, the closest he came was in 2008 when he made the final at the Australian Open. With that said, the 31-year-old has something to prove in 2016 as he hopes to reach the quarterfinals in Flushing Meadows for the third time in his career, having already done so in 2011 and last year.
Before he can think about a quarterfinal berth, though, Tsonga must focus on his fourth-round opponent, which will be American Jack Sock, who upset No. 7 Marin Cilic on Thursday, 6-4, 6-3, 6-3.
Tsonga and Sock met just once before with the Frenchman coming away victorious at the 2015 Madrid Masters.
On the women's side, former world No. 1 Caroline Wozniacki continues her great story as she cruised into the fourth round thanks to a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Romania's Monica Niculescu on Friday.
En route to her win, Wozniacki looked calm and composed, reminding fans in attendance why she was once the world's top-seeded player.
She broke serve on six of her seven opportunities and fired 17 winners but the Dane simply made fewer mistakes, committing just 16 unforced errors next to Niculescu's 29.
But Wozniacki's biggest test is immediately ahead of her as, in the fourth round, she faces off against American powerhouse Madison Keys, who is ranked No. 9 in the world.
In some respects, this match pits the past against the present and it will be an especially fascinating duel considering that Wozniacki and Keys have never faced each other before.
