FollowUS Open: Best And Worst Dressed
Retro threads and sparkling crystals dazzled at the 2017 U. S. Open, and that was just in the opening night showdown between Maria Sharapova and Simona Halep, endorsers of Nike Court and Adidas, respectively.
Sharapova and her Swarovski-crystal embellished dress won the night. However, Adidas' Pharrell Williams Collection won the tournament as its throwback kits looked super fly on everyone who wore them.
Halep and Sharapova were among the best dressed at Flushing Meadows. Few players looked horrific. Most were dressed terrific. Others, like Sharapova, stood out.
Even before she took the court, Sharapova's return to the bright hot lights off Broadway promised to garner attention. Playing in her first Grand Slam since returning from a drug suspension, Sharapova brushed aside the controversy and went about the business of pulling off the game's first big upset while wearing the tournament's showstopper.
Created by Italian designer Riccardo Tisci, Sharapova's little black evening dress featured peek-a-boo lace cutouts along with the sparkly crystals. The outfit, paired with a studded jacket, reportedly cost $1200. Doubt we won’t be seeing many of those on public courts.
For less than $100, you can get the Eleven Epiphany Pendulum dress worn by the always elegant Venus Williams. In a tweet, Williams pointed out how this asymmetrical design could pass as office attire.
Similarly, Jelena Jankovic looked fabulous in a bold patterned Fila Fall Heritage dress.
However, the boldest looks came from the Pharrell Williams Collection. Everyone brought their own personality to the look. Naomi Osaka personified youthful exuberance in her kit. Alexander Zverev channeled Bjorn Borg with a retro headband, lined loose shirt and knee-high socks.
Adidas and Pharrell Williams captured a 70s vibe to pay homage to what many consider the golden age of tennis. Alexander Chan, category director for Adidas Tennis, told Tennis Magazine, “When we were sitting down at the table (with Pharrell) to bring some ideas to life we talked about how you capture a mood. We were talking about the ‘70s being a golden era of tennis and our collective memory was of larger than life characters. We wanted to capture a little bit of that mood.”
The bold color blocking dominated the U. S. Open. Dominic Thiem, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Garbine Muguruza were among the other stars who wore the Pharrell ensembles.
While Adidas wowed, Nike Court underwhelmed with its Prism prints worn by Juan Martin del Potro, Madison Keys, Petra Kvitova and Elena Vesnina. Inspired by New York City lights, this collection wasn't awful. However, it wasn't that appealing either. Just, meh.
Agnieszka Radwanska stood out for the wrong reasons. Her Lotto Flamiflower floral nightmare featured a ruffled mesh skirt and flower power on steroids.
Other standouts—in a positive way—included Feliciano Lopez in Ellesse and Dominika Cibulkova, Alize Cornet and Christina McHale, who wore the Lacoste Fall Dress.
Nicole Gibbs managed to bring girlie girl fun to a tomboyish look in the New Balance Fall Akhaust tank. Similar to the Pharrell Williams kits, Gibbs' attire is accessible and practical for the weekend warrior tennis player.
After all, sports apparel companies market these outfits to mere mortals who want a chance to look like a pro even if they play like amateurs.
