FollowSerena, Pliskova Advance to the Semis at Flushing Meadows
NEW YORK – From Caroline Wozniacki's under-the-radar run to Venus Williams' resilience to a few shocking upsets, the storylines certainly have not lacked any interest on the women's side at this year's US Open. But what hasn't been discussed as much as it should be is Serena Williams sitting on the precipice of greatness.
It may seem all-too-obvious to point out the plethora of Serena's career accomplishments, but at the conclusion of this coming weekend, there is a good chance that the top-seeded American can officially call herself the greatest.
Serena entered this year's US Open with 22 Grand Slam victories, tied for most in the Open Era with the incomparable Steffi Graf. On Wednesday, despite a scare, Serena got one step closer as she survived her quarterfinal match with No. 5 Simona Halep, winning 6-2. 4-6, 6-3.
Wednesday's match marked the first time Serena lost a set in this year's tournament but while she was given a good run for her money, so to speak, Serena pulled through, firing 18 aces while winning 77 percent of her first serves and 81 percent of her net points. Serena also earned 50 winners to Halep's 20 but did commit 43 unforced errors off of her aggressive style. That may be something the oldest No. 1 seed in history needs to improve upon moving forward, but the bottom line is that Serena is moving on, making the semis or better in nine straight major tournaments.
No. 10 Karolina Pliskova, who had eliminated sister Venus on Monday, will be looking to do the same in the semis as she faces Serena next. On Wednesday, Pliskova needed just 57 minutes to get past the unseeded Ana Konjuh (6-2, 6-2) to advance.
In the other semi, No. 2 Angelique Kerber will face the aforementioned Caroline Wozniacki who looks to continue her incredible run in Flushing Meadows this week.
Both matches are coming up on Thursday night.
