FollowNicolas Jarry Is Making Waves In Rio
Nicolás Jarry (currently ranked world no. 94) scored the best victory of his career by defeating Albert Ramos-Vinolas of Spain 7-5 6-3. Ramos is currently ranked world no. 19 and was the fourth seed of the ATP 500 at Rio de Janeiro.
After a slow start with many nerves and mistakes, Jarry was able to calm down and overcome an initial break and then win the match in two sets. The Chilean has developed an intelligent game, based on powerful and well-placed groundstrokes, as well as some key approaches to the net.
With his 6'6” height, the 22-year-old has slowly become recognized on the circuit as a dangerous rival, as Chile's number one has begun to reap important victories.
Jarry is gifted with high competition DNA as he is the grandson of the former Chilean tennis player Jaime Fillol, who was number 14 in the world in 1974 and his parents also played professional volleyball in Chile.
Despite getting his best triumphs on the clay courts, his dream is to win Wimbledon supported by his strong serve that is his favorite stroke.
The “tower”, as his friends call him, began his ATP career in 2015 by reaching the Ecuador Open round-of-16 where he fell to Dusan Lajovic in three sets.
In 2017 he debuted in a Grand Slam after winning three qualifying rounds at Roland Garros.
This year he went straight into the Australian Open but lost in the first round against the Argentine Leonardo Mayer.
Jarry has begun to rise in the world rankings and is currently considered one of the best up-and-coming players under the age of 23 and as he says, “the trip is just beginning.”
2018 may be the year of his takeoff as he looks to continue his upward trajectory. He is certainly one to watch as the season unfolds.
