FollowKerber Defeats Wozniacki, Advances to Final
NEW YORK – It has been quite the tournament for Caroline Wozniacki. She had entered the 2016 US Open at No. 74. However, her run came to an end as she was defeated in the semifinal by second-seeded Angelique Kerber 6-4, 6-3.
Wozniacki, like she had been doing all tournament, fought valiantly on Thursday but it was clear that she met her match as Kerber, while most of her numbers weren't dominant, was determined not to be the second upset on the day after No. 1 Serena Williams fell in straight sets.
Kerber excelled in net points where she won 88 percent of her advances. She also won the baseline battle between the two counter-punchers, as well.
Kerber enters Sunday's final with some great news. Due to Serena's aforementioned loss in her semifinal matchup, she will be the new world no. 1 in women's tennis regardless of what happens in the final. This change will officially end Serena's incredible 186-week reign at the top.
Despite her loss, Wozniacki will significantly jump in the WTA rankings after the US Open draws to a close. She unexpectedly came this far and ousted some pretty big names along the way, including American Madison Keys. While Thursday's loss must be disappointing, the Danish veteran has a lot to build off of after her efforts in the Big Apple.
For Kerber, she will face No. 10 Karolina Pliskova, who shocked the tennis world earlier by ousting the aforementioned Williams in straight sets.
Sunday's final may not be the top two seeds like many were hoping for but it should be an entertaining match nonetheless. Pliskova will be looking for a second-straight upset as she hopes to make the most of her first career Grand Slam final. As for Kerber, she advances to her third Grand Slam final in 2016 and will look to take home her second Grand Slam title of the year to go with her Australian Open crown.
