FollowIndian Wells Roundtable Roundup
Today at the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells, top players of both the ATP and WTA held roundtable talks with the press. Following Andy Murray’s comments last week that Maria Sharapova should not receive wild cards in her return from a 15-month doping ban, the politics of her return remained a hot topic.
Murray followed up his comments with acknowledgement that the logistics of Sharapova returning through qualifying in Futures would be difficult. Incoming world number one Angelique Kerber questioned the decision to award Sharapova entry into the main draw of the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix in Stuttgart because it denies a German player the chance to enter the tournament, when Kerber’s recent success has helped the sport grow in her home country.
Asked if Sharapova would be welcomed back to the tour, Agnieszka Radwanska shrugged and said, “I don’t know.” Garbiñe Muguruza simply responded that her return would be “good for tennis, good for sponsors” and did not weigh in with a personal opinion. Meanwhile, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga shared maybe the strongest dissent, arguing that wild cards are “special” and that giving one to a player returning from a doping ban would be like giving candy to a child who misbehaved.
Looking ahead to the tournament at hand, top players are optimistic. Fan favorite Roger Federer said it was good to be back and that he was “enjoying practice more than ever.” Federer finds himself in a tricky quarter of draw, to say the least, with Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic, Nick Kyrgios, Alexander Zverev, and Juan Martin Del Potro all fighting for a spot in the semi-finals. While players might frequently feign ignorance of the draw, Murray plainly pointed out that “it’s difficult to avoid the draws because they’re plastered all over the walls.”
Kerber has been on site for a couple days now and feels well-adjusted to the conditions. Asked about Serena Williams’ withdrawal from the tournament, Kerber wished her the best in recovering from the persistent knee problems that have kept her from top form. Third seed Karolina Pliskova was happy with the revised draw because it placed her further away from sister Kristyna.
