FollowEdberg Open to Coaching Federer
After spending one week in training camp with Roger Federer at his base in Dubai this month, former world No. 1 Stefan Edberg said he would be open to coaching the Swiss – if asked.
“It's a matter for us to find time to fit it in,” the 47-year-old told Stockholm's Svenska Dagbladets on Thursday. “If we can, I would be more than happy.”
During their time together, Edberg advised Federer to play a more attacking game in order to pressure the likes of Rafael Nadal or Novak Djokovic.
“The idea of the camp was that I would give my views and come up with some feedback,” said the Swede. “He wants to try some new things.”
Federer has stated that Edberg was always a childhood idol of his, so a potential collaboration could go a long way despite Edberg's lack of experience coaching at the pro level.
“I was very surprised (that Federer asked) because it's so long since I left tennis,” he said. “But I was also very flattered. I've never really thought about coaching and if it had not been Federer doing the asking, honestly, I would not have been interested.”
Swiss Davis Cup captain Severin Luthi currently serves as Federer's sole coach after the departure of Paul Annacone in October.
