FollowUpdate on the Arthur Ashe Stadium Roof
While the roof over Arthur Ashe Stadium will not be completed until the 2016 US Open, changes are already apparent on the site. By the 2015 tournament, the full fixed portion of the roof should be installed, following relentless work by architects, electricians, and steel workers over the previous year. Despite delays during the winter weather in New York, the current phase should be completed by June, at which point the cranes will be removed and the site cleaned prior to the tournament.
The fixed portion of the roof will be supported by eight columns, and the covering for the roof will be visible around the south and west ends of the stadium. However, the two retractable sections of the roof will not be installed until after this year's event.
While the partial construction should not have an impact on the players or obstruct the view of the fans, it will be visible above the stadium. At the time of completion, moreover, the roof will not touch any part of the existing stadium. This marks an impressive engineering response to the challenge of building a new roof over an existing building. The design firm in control of the addition, ROSSETTI Architects, is focusing on how to blend the old and new elements of Arthur Ashe naturally to form a cohesive whole.
Also on their agenda for the coming years are the completion of the new Grandstand stadium, which is scheduled to be completed in 2016, and the new Louis Armstrong Stadium, scheduled for 2018. By then, the US Open venue at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center should look like a thoroughly fresh event.
